At the request of a wealthy auto enthusiast, legendary body designer Sergio Pininfarina created a one-off and truly unique Mercedes 300 SEL 6.3 Coupé.

At the end of the 1960s, a wealthy Dutch entrepreneur asked Mercedes-Benz if a coupe conversion of a Mercedes 300 SEL 6.3 could be carried out at the factory but Mercedes declined. The businessman then turned to Turin stylist Sergio Pininfarina with a freshly bought new car - one of the world's leading addresses when it comes to car design. Pininfarina was not short of ideas - and the Dutchman did not lack the necessary financial means to realize an extraordinary project, the bottom line of which was 400,000 Dutch guilders (approx. 180,000 euros).

The Italians left the wheelbase and track unchanged, but the appearance of the Mercedes was turned upside down by the use of handcrafted parts (fenders, bonnet, trunk lid, roof, extended doors). Too edgy? Too progressive? Probably for the prevailing taste at the time, but the Pininfarina Coupé remained unique. Nevertheless, it is unmistakable that the Turin creation certainly anticipated some styling elements of a later common design language in automotive engineering. In addition: beauty is known to be in the eye of the beholder. And there is no question that this Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 Pininfarina Coupé is an absolutely “unique” model.
