5500332

Alloy body 300SL

Bought new by Casablanca Mercedes-Benz agent Joseph F. Weckerlé, this is the only one of the 24 alloy bodied 'Gullwings' to be sold to the African continent. Finished in silver grey metallic with a blue vinyl and gabardine fabric interior it was also equipped with a high-speed 3.42 rear axle and a 270 km/h speedometer. Not long after it was delivered to Weckerlé, it was sold to the United States. In 1962, it joined the stable of Mercer D. Helms, who in turn sold it to Jack F. Bryan in 1975. He entrusted the car to specialist Paul Russell for a careful recommissioning for what was a very hefty $45,000 at the time. As it turned out, it was money well spent and the rare alloy 300 SL won several awards during the early 1980s. It caught the attention of Mercedes-Benz enthusiast Hyatt Cheek, who bought chassis 5500332 in 1982. The former president of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America would own the car for well over thirty years. He famously used the car at all sorts of events like the Colorado Grand and Texas 1000 road rallies. All the while, it remained in the caring hands of Paul Russell, who kept the car in tip-top condition. The next custodian acquired the car in 2014 and eventually consigned it to headline the 2022 RM Sotheby's Arizona sale.

Alloy body 300SL

The 20th of the 29 Alloy 'Gullwings' built, this example was ordered by a Swiss industrialist, who picked the car himself and drove it home in October of 1955. By the 1960s, the 300 SL resurfaced in the United States. It remained here for over two decades passing through the hands of several noted collectors. In 1989 chassis 5500786 was back in Europe after it was acquired by Swedish collector Hans Thulin. He had the car meticulously restored by Kienle Automobiltechnik. It was soon after sold to a German collector and more recently it returned to Swiss hands.
